About the club

A small alpine town, a big fishing calendar.

Khancoban sits where the Snowy Mountains meet the Upper Murray, and the club has grown up around the water that surrounds it — the Khancoban Pondage on the doorstep, the Upper Murray, Tooma, Swampy Plain and Geehi Rivers within easy reach, and Kosciuszko National Park rising behind it all.

We're part of the wider Monaro Acclimatisation Society network of trout and native fish clubs, and we work alongside neighbouring clubs like Jingellic / Walwa Fishing Club to keep the rivers stocked and fishable for the next generation.

Whatever brings you to the water — a quiet morning on the Pondage or a weekend chasing cod on the Upper Murray — there's a place for you here.

Where we fish

Seven waters, one river system.

The club's fishing and stocking area covers some of the most scenic trout waters in the Upper Murray region.

Beginning in the alpine waters of Geehi Dam, the area follows the Geehi River and Swampy Plain River as they flow into Khancoban Pondage before joining the Indi River, eventually reaching the Murray River just upstream of Bringenbrong Bridge on the NSW–Victoria border.

To the north, beyond the adjacent mountain range, Tooma Dam offers another outstanding high-country fishery. Water from the Tooma catchment descends almost 900 metres through the spectacular Tooma River, eventually flowing into the Murray River. This diverse network of lakes, dams and rivers provides exceptional fishing opportunities, from high-altitude alpine waters to the lower reaches of the Upper Murray.

01 · Pondage

Khancoban Pondage

Year-round fishing right at the edge of town, and the easiest water for a family outing. Regularly stocked with brown trout, rainbow trout, yearling salmon and Murray cod, with a boat ramp and picnic area alongside it.

02 · River

Murray River (Indi River)

The club's cod water, stocked at access points from Biggara on the Indi River, through Bringenbrong Bridge and down through Towong and Tintaldra. The Murray River (Indi River) is also good for brown and rainbow trout fishing. Runs jointly with Jingellic / Walwa Fishing Club send tens of thousands of Murray cod fingerlings into this stretch each season.

03 · River

Tooma River & Tumbarumba Creek

Mountain tributaries stocked with brown and rainbow trout fry, from Possum Point up to the National Park boundary. Cod releases here are managed carefully to protect the local Macquarie perch population.

04 · River

Swampy Plain River

Alpine water running down out of Kosciuszko National Park, past the Geehi airstrip and through to Khancoban itself — designated Alpine Waters, and classic high-country trout territory. Some of the best fly fishing in the region, for anyone willing to walk in a little further.

05 · River

Geehi River

Feeding into the Swampy Plain from deep inside Kosciuszko National Park, the Geehi is remote, cold and largely wild trout water — a favourite among fly fishers, and best suited to those happy to walk further in for a quieter beat.

06 · Dam

Geehi Dam

A small Snowy Scheme storage tucked into the upper Geehi valley, holding trout in cold, deep water within the National Park — a quieter alternative to the Pondage for those chasing solitude.

07 · Dam

Tooma Dam

Perched high above the Tooma River as part of the Snowy Scheme, this alpine storage offers another still-water trout option a short drive from town.

Before you go

Safety on the water.

These are real alpine waters, not a suburban lake. A few things worth knowing before you launch a boat or wade in.

Water levels

Hydro generation can cause rapid changes in dam and river heights, sometimes with little warning.

Weather

Conditions at altitude can turn dramatically within minutes. Prepare properly before every trip.

Water temperature

Capsizing or falling into cold water can be life-threatening. Dress and plan for the water, not just the air.

Communication

Phone and radio coverage isn't always available in remote spots. Tell someone where you're launching from, where you're headed, how many are with you, and when you'll be back.

Dam hazards

All of our dams are designated Alpine Waters. A lifejacket is compulsory for everyone in a vessel under 4.8m, and at all times when wearing waders or in a canoe or kayak.

River hazards

The Swampy Plain River is also designated Alpine Waters — the same lifejacket rules apply.

Stocking & conservation

We put back more than we take out.

Each year the club funds and coordinates fish releases across the local river system, working with Gaden Hatchery and neighbouring clubs to keep the waters healthy.

Alongside regular working bees and stocking runs, the year is built around a few fixtures everyone turns out for.

April · School holidays

Upper Murray Fishing Challenge

The club's flagship competition, open to everyone. Categories for men, women and under-16s across rainbow, brown, native, redfin and carp, with around $4,000 in vouchers and prizes and a presentation night at the Alpine Inn. Entry is $20 for members and $40 for non-members, half price for under-16s.

Gone Fishing Weekend

A full weekend on the water, kicking off Saturday morning with hands-on sessions for anglers of all ages, then rolling straight into a weekend-long fishing competition open to everyone — not just members.

Community Christmas Party

The club's end-of-year gathering for members, families and the wider Khancoban community, alongside the Alpine Inn's Christmas ham and turkey raffles run with the local RFS.
